Her Reputation Precedes Her

Freja opened the Y-3 show last night and her "performance" is causing quite a stir. The show was a fun, laser light spectacle with fun being the operative word.
"I've done this job for 28 years and sometimes I feel like I've done everything," explained Mr. Yamamoto backstage. "This time I said to myself, Yohji, you must have fun!"
The show, which was an ode to masked heroes like Zorro, ended with Yohji fighting and beating a male model, only to be knocked down to the floor by Freja. I guess knightess in shining armor is something we should now add to her resume. :)

Anyway, check out what some press are saying about it:

fibre2fashion: The show closed with a bang and the superhero theme came full circle as Mr. Yamamoto and a masked male model duked it out in front of the audience. Yamamoto emerged as the winner after the hardcore scuffle. That is, until tough-as-nails supermodel Freja Beha knocked the designer back down to the ground.

Racked: Finale! Yohji Yamamoto just practiced self defense in a laser circle, taking down a male model but beat by Freja Beha Erichsen. Of course.

Telegraph: And he even staged a mock “fight” where he felled a male model with a katate (sic) kick, but was then knocked down by a feisty supermodel, Freja Beha.

I guess her tough, androgynous reputation is well known, but in this instance I don't mind. So surprise number 1 of fashion week has already happened with this comical spectacle. I wonder what other surprises are in store for us? You know Freja always has a few up her sleeve every fahsion week. Whether they're good (like this one) or bad (like missing Paris fashion week) they definitely keep us all interested.

And

Backstage at Prada FW0910

Ok, maybe a less obvious pattern for this second set, but I just wanted an excuse to post the Prada picture again. :) I can't wait to see what the upcoming season will bring.

Rick Owens and Zombies

The two kind of seem to go hand in hand, no? But here I'm only putting them together arbitrarily for the sake of this post.

First of all, Freja is in Shanghai for the Chanel show. Can't you just hear the collective screams of girlish glee emanating from China? We only have a couple of backstage shots so far:

Interesting to note that Freja is sporting a real Rick Owens leather jacket now. The one she previously wore was done in the Rick Owens style, but it wasn't actually one. It could have been this Vince jacket, but I'm not sure. The differences are subtle but palpable once you see them side by side. I know a lot of people were getting their jackets confused, but Rick ones are very distinctive...at least to me.

I feel like every time we see Freja she's wearing something new but of course in black. Typical of her to change up her style yet simultaneously keep it the same. :) It's that balance that she seems to strike so well in her modeling, her personality and even in her street wear.

Secondly, if you've ever wanted to see what Zombie Freja would look like, check out the previews from Fashematic's new zine, Fashematical:

They took her Lanvin SS10 appearance as inspiration. According to the site, the zine is "a collection of illustrations reinterpreting the stars of the catwalk as part of either a horde of zombies or an army of robots, hell-bent on taking planet Earth for themselves."

I love when it when people can see the fun in fashion. After all, we can't all be serious all the time (That's something that I know I can be guilty of with my long, musing posts about Freja's place in the industry). I wonder how Freja would feel about her zombie rendering? Personally I find it cool and kind of flattering.

Anyway, after a little drought of news, it seems Freja is back in full force.

Intentional Irony or Mere Coincidence?

We have some snaps of the new Gap campaign thanks to tFS member kimair. And just like everyone else, I can't help but to notice and chuckle at the very choice wording accompanying each model's shot.

Freja: Real Straight (Do I even have to say anything? )
Anja: Always Skinny (It's true, Anja has always been thin. Even more so lately.)

Isabeli: Curvy (Brazilians are definitely known for their curves. Although curvy in the fashion world is still super skinny in the real world.)

Maryna: Sexy Boot (Arguably the sexiest VS/high fashion model out there. She does indeed have a sexy boot-y.)

Now I can't wait to see the full campaign! I hope we get more nuggets of comedic irony. You have to wonder if Patrick Robinson is just having some fun with this. I mean come on. The wording matches up almost too perfectly that it has to be intentional. The probability of coincidence is just too unlikely. But I guess the wording is so obviously ironic and fitting to all of us because we follow fashion and models. To your average Gap customer the words clearly describe the cut of the jeans, not the model wearing the jeans.

Although I've got to hand it to Mr. Robinson. Whether intentional or not, this is definitely the way to give all of us fashion fanatics a good laugh. Now we'll surely remember the Gap when we're thinking about jeans for the fall. And isn't that what good advertising is about? Bravo.
